How to write a profile that gets replies
Your profile is your first hello. How to write a few honest lines and choose photos that make people want to start a conversation.
Most people decide whether to write to you within a few seconds. They glance at your photos, read the first lines of your profile and ask themselves one question: do I have something to say to this person? A good profile doesn't try to impress everyone. It gives the right people an easy way to start talking.
Start with something specific
"I love travelling, music and good food" describes almost everyone on the planet. Swap general statements for small, concrete details:
- Instead of "I love travelling", try "Last summer: three countries by night train, and the next route is almost planned."
- Instead of "I like cooking", try "My lentil soup has a small fan club. Ask me for the recipe."
- Instead of "I'm easy-going", describe your perfect lazy Sunday.
Specific details are memorable, and each one is a ready-made first question for the other person.
Say what you're looking for
You don't need a list of requirements, but one sentence about your intentions saves everyone time. "Looking for someone to explore new cafés with — and see where it goes" sounds very different from "Ready for a serious relationship". Both are fine. Being clear attracts people who want the same thing.
Keep the tone positive. Lines like "no drama" or "don't write if you…" say more about past disappointments than about you. Describe what you do want instead.
Keep it short and easy to read
Three to six short sentences are usually enough. Split the text into small paragraphs and read it aloud before saving: if it sounds like you talking to a friend, it works. A little humour helps, but don't hide behind jokes — people want to meet the real you.
Choose photos that look like you today
Photos matter as much as words. A few simple rules:
- Make the first photo a clear, recent picture of your face — no sunglasses, no heavy filters.
- Add at least one full-length photo from the last year or two.
- Show something you enjoy: hiking, playing music, cooking, walking your dog.
- Skip group photos where it's hard to tell which person is you.
- Natural light by a window or outdoors beats any filter.
People feel more comfortable writing to someone who looks real and approachable. And a first meeting goes better when your date recognises you straight away.
Fill in the details
Interests, languages and what you're looking for help the right people find you in search. On YADate every field is optional, but each one you add is another reason for someone to say hello.
Refresh it from time to time
A profile isn't a one-off task. When you pick up a new hobby, visit a new place or notice that people keep asking about the same thing, update your text. A fresh detail is a new conversation starter.
Write your profile for the one person you'd love to meet, not for everyone. The right people will recognise themselves in it.
